Live recording....like "live" in a pub or bar?

Or just "live" like in the living room?

If that happeped to me(and I wasn't in a bar) I would point the finger at an open microphone. Do you have a gate?

It is common to pick up computer fan noise in a home recording environment. If you are recording multiple tracks in a pop/rock genre, by the time you come to do the mix, this "noise floor" won't be noticeable. However, if you are producing acoustic music or have long quiet passages, you will need to take some practical steps if you're serious about reducing this problem.

The first step is to minimise the fan noise itself by either, replacing your fans with quieter models, or "soundproofing your tower by building a box around it. Somewhere on the net thare are full plans and instructions for doing this. Alternatively, buy some extension cables that will allow you to place your microphones or tower in seperate rooms.

If different rooms aren't an option, try to get your microphones as far away from the source of the noise as possible. Use mics with a cardiod pattern, which means they only pick up sounds from the front, and position them so that they are pointing away from the fan noise.

If the noise you are getting is happening during "line in" recordings (i.e. you have no live mics), then it could be a number of other factors causing it that is unrelated to fan noise.

There is nothing common about fan noise, I do not care how you get it.
The issue the person described read more like it was "bleeding" internally, so that rules out your box theory.

It doesn't show up in mine and I SIT on the computer!
