| Is it possible to take a song from a cd and separate each instrument into it's own track? I want to be able to play only the drums, guitar, or bass by itself. |

naw man you cant do that. what exactly are your trying to do? sample something? you gotta work around it somehow.
if its bass from a sample you want, you could try running thru a low-pass filter so you only hear the low end.
if its drums you want, find a space in the song where you can get the drums from then chop it up.
if its guitars you want, find where the guitars are and chop it up. take the chops and rearrange them so they fit your song. |

And if you are thinking of sampling parts of a recording, remember that you will be infringing the record company's copyright in doing so and they don't take too kindly to that!
If your use is for research or education, the only ways you can seperate the tracks is either to get hold of the multitrack master from the studio that made it, or get a good musician or arranger to manually copy the arrangement as seperate midi tracks. In fact, if it is a very popular song, someone may have already done this. Search the midi file sites for the song. You may be lucky! |

It is possible. It will also prove to be expensive and take a buttload of your time. Equalizing a song can drop parts out(not completely and the drops will effect the other parts. A good 32 band EQ, after deciding which instrument you want to erase, can help in this. Hell it might take two EQ's:) find the part, isolate the frequency and treak it until it is as gone as it will get.
But like the others said, without the Masters(and you will NEVER get those) it ain't gonna happen. As for copyright infringment, I wouldn't give that a second thought, it's all education when it comes to music. Isn't like your gonna make any cash off of it:) |
